Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Lincoln just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can inhibit a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area frequently to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have piled up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, placing a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, leading to damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Lincoln will more than likely swing up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At AW Heating & Air Conditioning in Lincoln, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or buying a new system.
