The weather is finally heating up and soon you may have to switch over to your air conditioner. Along with scheduling your annual air conditioner service with the team at AW Heating & Air Conditioning, there are a few other tasks you can do to stay comfortable and save money this season.
During the in-between season in Lincoln, those far too few spring temps, you probably use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more comfortable during the warmer days, but also save you on energy costs? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning properly. Here’s a couple things to note:
Raise Your Thermostat
This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by even a couple degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level very much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the duration of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.
Adjust Air Direction
Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust depending on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand beneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature of the air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature on the thermostat.
Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There
Treat your ceiling fan like you do lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan produces you’re wasting energy by using your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
